Career
As Heald's Chairman, Martin is a respected and trusted member of both the Heald team and the local business community. Martin qualified over 25 years ago and joined the firm in 1983. He has focussed on property and construction law for most of his career.
He is able to talk to people in their language, being sensitive to their understanding of property and construction issues. That's important, because his clients include experienced property developers, contractors, and property design professionals and as well as business people for whom property is important but not their main concern.
Martin uses strong team-building and deal-making skills in a variety of development and other complex transactions for UK and overseas-based clients.
Past experience includes handling two House of Lords cases, on property finance and fraud respectively, as well as a wide variety of legal work that has given him a broad understanding of clients' needs. For many years Martin has preferred to steer clients away from the Courts, concentrating on bringing parties and their teams together to make deals.
Since 2002 he has also built a successful practice as a Commercial Mediator.
Education
- Manchester Grammar School.
- University College London.
Outside activities
Martin is closely involved in the Milton Keynes community. He is a founder and the Chairman of Trustees of Extra Mile Challenges, an umbrella charity which organises an annual 500 mile cycling team relay in Europe. It has raised over £750,000 for good causes since 2003. Martin is an active member of a local Rotary Club, and a member of the Boards of Milton Keynes Business Leaders Partnership and of Milton Keynes Economy & Learning Partnership as well as Extra Mile Challenges.
Having no ball skills and preferring to take his exercise sitting down, cycling and rowing set the limits of Martin’s sporting interests. He is perhaps the only lawyer in the Western world who not only plays no golf, but likens it as a spectator sport to watching paint dry.
Martin’s musical tastes are more eclectic, ranging from rock bands of which few other than he have ever heard, to grand opera.
