 The first employee has been sent to jail for illegally accessing personal data. In this land mark case the employee of an accident repair company used his colleagues’ login details to access thousands of customer records containing personal data, without permission, The software system used provided repair cost estimates and is used by many in the industry. When he moved to another company he continued to use the login details to access the system and hence access personal data that he had no right to.

The employee was sentenced to 6 month in November 2018 and was the first person to be imprisoned by the ICO using the Computer Misuse Act of 1990.

The individual has now been ordered to pay a £25,500 confiscation order under the proceeds of crime act and £8,000 costs.
