Our Seminar - How Much of Your Land Will the Taxman Harvest?
On Thursday, 25th September 2025, Heald Solicitors welcomed farm owners at Buckingham Golf Club for the seminar How Much of Your Land Will the Taxman Harvest? The event addressed one of the most pressing concerns for farmers and landowners: the impact of recent changes to Inheritance Tax (IHT) announced in the 2024 Autumn Budget.
The new rules will come into effect from 6th April 2026 and will significantly alter Agricultural Property Relief (APR). After that, a full 100% APR will apply only to the first £1 million of combined agricultural and business property. Any value above this will receive relief at a reduced rate of 50%, meaning IHT will be payable at an effective rate of 20%. This change will place considerable pressure on farming families who are often asset-rich but cash-poor.
The seminar explored these challenges in depth, providing practical strategies to mitigate liabilities and safeguard family businesses. Topics included the potential role of Family Investment Companies (FICs) in succession planning, effective use of trusts and lifetime gifting, and maximising agricultural and business property reliefs.
Attendees engaged in lively discussion, raising thoughtful questions about how the reforms might affect the future of farming. Many shared concerns that higher tax burdens could lead to the sale of farmland, ultimately reducing land available for food production.
We appreciate the challenges facing farmers and rural landowners and are committed to helping you protect your assets and secure the future of your family business.
